Kardos rose on his knees and placed his hand on the bite mark at his neck. As his fingers brushed her bite, several strong, conflicting emotions barreled through him; from pride to desire to anger, but the strongest was disbelief. As his brain caught up to the implications of what she’d done, he could not control the fury that whirled through him.

Kardos grabbed her by the arms and shook her once, hard. “What did you do?” he roared. “What fucking possessed you to do that?”

Shaya kept her face turned away, her body tense and alert.

“Look at me!” he demanded. “Look at me now, Shaya!”

She didn’t, choosing to remain as still as possible, and it almost looked as though she was barely breathing.

Kardos took a deep breath as his anger expanded into a white-hot blinding rage. She had bitten him! She had tied him to her and destroyed any chance of him gaining the seat of the high chief.
